Empty HPMC Capsules, Sizes 00–4

YOKO-EC-HPMC covers empty two-piece HPMC capsules in sizes 00, 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4. The reference table lists nominal internal volumes from 0.95 mL for size 00 to 0.20 mL for size 4 and average empty-shell weights from 123 to 38 mg. Capsule size must be selected from formulation bulk density, target fill mass, dosing method, shell compatibility, storage, and destination requirements.

Equipment purpose

What this machine is designed to do

These non-gelatin hard-capsule shells are intended to receive a compatible powder, granule, pellet, or other validated fill on suitable capsule-filling equipment. Colour, printing, closure, packaging, microbiological and chemical specifications, and supporting documents are confirmed for the intended product and market before supply.

Operating sequence

Working principle

Matched cap and body components are supplied pre-assembled for orientation and separation by a compatible filling machine. The body receives the metered formulation, after which cap and body are rejoined and locked. Filling performance depends on shell dimensions and moisture condition, formulation flow and bulk density, tooling, vacuum, closing force, storage, and environmental handling; the shell itself does not determine the final filled weight.

Review points

  • Six reference sizes cover 00 through 4 with documented nominal dimensions, volumes, and average shell weights.
  • The table separates shell volume from illustrative powder-weight calculations at bulk densities of 0.6, 0.8, 1.0, and 1.2 g/mL.
  • Actual fill mass depends on tapped behaviour, dosing method, compression, flow, and the usable fill volume, not density multiplication alone.
  • Shell dimensions and tolerances should be checked against the filling-machine tooling and closure inspection method.
  • Colour, opacity, printing, locked length, packing configuration, storage, and moisture protection form part of the approved specification.
  • A compatibility study should cover filling, closing, brittleness or deformation, visual defects, package protection, and stability under intended conditions.

Selection questions

Frequently asked questions

How is the correct YOKO-EC-HPMC capsule size selected?

Start with target fill mass, bulk and tapped density, flow, dosing method, permissible compaction, ingredient volume, and any pellets or multiple fills. The table's density-based weights are useful estimates, not guaranteed fill weights. Trial the formulation in candidate sizes and confirm closing, weight variation, appearance, and package fit before final selection.

Do the listed 0.20–0.95 mL volumes equal the usable fill volume?

They are nominal capsule-volume references for sizes 4 through 00. Usable volume can be lower because the formulation must be dosed and the capsule closed correctly. Powder aeration, compression, plug length, pellets, tooling, and fill method change the achieved mass. Use the table for initial sizing and a filling trial for confirmation.

Can HPMC capsules run on an existing capsule filler?

Often they can, but compatibility should not be assumed. Confirm capsule dimensions, locking geometry, shell condition, tooling, vacuum, orientation, separation, closing force, speed, and environmental conditions. Run production-intent shells and formulation to check separation failures, dents, splits, telescoping, unlocked capsules, and reject rate.

Can YOKO-EC-HPMC shells be used for liquid fills?

Only after a specific compatibility and sealing assessment. Provide the liquid composition, water activity, solvent system, viscosity, dose, shell contact time, proposed sealing method, package barrier, and storage conditions. Some fills may soften, embrittle, leak through, or interact with the shell, so a stability programme is required before commercial use.

Which samples and documents should be agreed before supply?

Define size, colour, print artwork, shell and dimensional specification, packing quantity, liner and moisture protection, sample quantity, approved test methods, certificate requirements, microbiological or chemical limits, storage, shelf-life basis, destination requirements, and change-notification expectations. Final requirements belong in the approved purchase specification.
